A baby with a blocked nose... ? Have no fear!

First some important information: it's worth knowing that 70-80% of respiratory infections in children are caused by viruses, and there is no targeted treatment for these viral infections, unlike bacterial infections which are treated with antibiotics. Still, there is nothing to fear: several remedies are available to help alleviate the respiratory symptoms that come with a blocked nose. Before beginning any treatment, always consult your doctor or paediatrician.

Nasal hygiene in babies

One effective remedy for a blocked nose in babies is using a specific syringe and nozzle to flush dust, pollen and secretions out of the nostrils. The procedure is gentle and not very invasive for the child: simply fill the syringe with saline, gently insert the tip of the nozzle in a nostril and press slowly on the plunger. The secretions are expelled through the opposite nostril.
Remember that sinus rinsing with certain types of syringes is only recommended after 4 months of age.

Another approach: a nasal irrigation device

Another solution for nasal hygiene in children is the use of a nasal irrigation device. A saline solution is micronised (i.e. nebulised to produce particles suited for the upper airways) to help remove the mucus that is blocked in the nasal cavities.
A wide range of nasal irrigation devices are available on the market, but they all share the same fundamental mode of operation. The internal chamber of the device receives a saline solution specifically prepared for nasal irrigation; the external chamber collects the liquid and secretions that fall from the nose. The nasal irrigation device can be activated by connecting it to your piston aerosol, following the device's instructions for use. Some nasal irrigation devices also work without needing to be connected to an aerosol.

Nasal spray for a blocked nose

If your baby's nostrils are blocked up, you may choose to purchase a nasal spray that flushes the nostril with an isotonic or hypertonic solution. A few sprays are enough to moisturise the nostrils and offer rapid relief! Always follow the instructions for use; some nasal sprays can only be used from 6 months of age.
